It feels so surreal living during these times. Confined to our own personal space for the most part! All this because of a dreaded virus that is wiping people out almost at the pace of the Spanish flu back in 1918. Thankfully technology and medicine has advanced incredibly well over the years in order to help the population recover and build immunity.
Now, I ask – if we are able to get the smartest people to come up with a vaccine to help people globally…how is it that we simply cannot get a handle on GBV? It is proven that SA has the highest femicide rates than anywhere else GLOBALLY! What are we doing? Why are we not doing more?
Have you not grown tired of and weary of seeing the news? The news about little girls going missing and found deceased under horrible circumstances? I am so mad that our government has not taken greater steps to preventing these issues. Surely, there are enough smart people that they could consult in order to tackle this issue?
I know that I “alone” don’t have the ability to take on this issue and “fix” it. This is why I have dedicated the month of August to driving the message around GBV…Globally! “A picture is worth a thousand words” – this was derived from what Hendrik Ibsen said “A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed”. This was of course para-phrased and plagiarized later on but I feel that his words carry more weight.
For the month of August, we will be sharing information on GBV in the hope of educating people who may have misconceptions around this. We are hosting a virtual walk/run on the 28th and 29th August – 50% of the funds raised are donated to Fightback SA.
The objective is that on the 28th and 29th August, we come together and share our solidarity in support against GBV. There is a downloadable A4 Template which may be printed. Take a picture of yourself with the A4 banner on either of those days and tag us on social media. Fight Back SA (NPO 239-623) provides free self-defense classes & pepper sprays to young women & children living in high risk & crime-ridden areas. We need to empower our women to take their safety into their own hands if we are to combat GBV in SA.
Fight Back SA are doing the most incredible work and we would love to show our support in helping them expand even more! The more people they reach, the more can be helped and more lives can be saved!
Our objective?
We want to draw more attention to the issue. We want to flood the internet with these images to show that we will not be silenced. That something needs to happen. Someone needs to step up and help our woman and children. Nelson Mandela once said “Children are our greatest treasure. They are our future”. We need to make sure they have a chance at a future and a better one at that!
